Topstep Rules for Running Multiple Accounts (as We Read Them)
4 min read · also published as a field note
Topstep's rulebook has one feature that matters more to a farm than anything else in it: the copy connection switches itself off while a payout is processing. Here is the set, read for what it does to a multi-account structure.
Every rule below is our reading of Topstep's published terms in September 2026 — from the firm's own help pages where we could reach them, cross-read against dated third-party summaries where we could not. Firms change these often and without much notice, plan types differ, and the exact wording matters. Before you plan anything around a rule, read it on Topstep's own site. This is not a review, a ranking, or a recommendation.
The cap: no stated limit on Combines, one profile
Topstep states there is no limit to the number of Trading Combines you can hold, provided they all sit under one profile. Funded accounts are judged independently. The practical boundary is therefore not a number but your capacity to run seats under the rules — and, as always, the concentration risk of one firm. The cap is the edge of the field applies with the field's edge set by you rather than the firm.
The Maximum Loss Limit: trails end-of-day, liquidates in real time
This is the rule to read twice. The MLL rises with your end-of-day balance and never falls, and it locks permanently once it reaches the starting balance. But breaches are checked continuously using real-time net P&L, including unrealised — so an open position moving against you can liquidate the account intraday even though the *floor itself* only moves at the close. On the $50K Combine the MLL is $2,000; $3,000 and $4,500 on the larger sizes. For a farm, "end-of-day trailing" here does not mean "intraday-safe." Trailing drawdown across many accounts is the arithmetic of that on ten seats.
Consistency: at the Combine, and again at payout
For passing, Topstep asks that your best day stay below a share of the profit target. Topstep's Trading Combine parameters help article gave 55% and its program overview page gave 50% when we read them in September 2026 — read the current figure on the article that governs your account. At the Express Funded stage there are two payout paths: a standard path built on winning days of $150+, and a consistency path where the largest day may not exceed 40% of net profit in the payout window. Either way the funded tree is paced — consistency rules compared.
Payouts: winning days, caps, and the copier switching off
Express Funded payouts require winning days (five of $150+ on the standard path), can be requested during CME hours, have a minimum, and are capped per request at a share of the balance. And — the farm-critical line — the copy-trading connection is automatically disabled while a payout processes. A funded seat that has requested a payout drops out of its tree and re-joins afterwards. Payout cadence and the buffer and copying across accounts both assume this happens.
The trading day and the close
Topstep's trading day runs from 5:00 PM CT to 3:10 PM CT the next day; positions must be flat by the close. Micros are permitted and count at a 10:1 ratio against the contract limits. The 4:10 problem is this rule in general form.
What this means for a farm
Topstep's rulebook, as read: no stated Combine limit under one profile, an MLL that must be respected intraday despite trailing end-of-day, paced payouts, and a copier that pauses on every payout. The operator's disciplines are to size the tree for the real-time check, to schedule payouts so the tree is not thinned on the same day, and to reconcile followers after every payout window.

Common Questions
Is Topstep's Maximum Loss Limit intraday or end-of-day?
Both, in a sense: the limit itself moves only with the end-of-day balance and never falls, but a breach is checked in real time including open P&L, so an open position can liquidate the account intraday. A farm would treat it as intraday.
Can I copy trade during a Topstep payout?
As we read the payout policy, the copy-trading connection is automatically disabled while a payout is processed. A farm has to expect that seat to sit out and re-join, and reconcile it afterwards.
