Scout, Protect, Press: The First One's Just a Scout
September 18, 2026 · 2 min read
Most first entries are not the winner. That is not pessimism; it is what entries are — noisy, early, and wrong more often than they are right. DCT builds its whole position-management habit around that fact, in three words.
Scout
The first position is small — a scout sent to test whether the read is confirmed by price. It is sized so that being wrong costs almost nothing against the cycle's room. A scout that fails is information, not a loss to defend.
Protect
Once the scout is working — structure holding, price confirming — the stop moves to breakeven. From that moment the position cannot cost the account anything. Protect happens *before* any size is added, always. The order is the discipline.
Press
Only a protected position is pressed — size added in the direction the trade is already going, each addition itself protected. The account is never larger in a trade than the trade has already earned the right to carry.
The honest note on pressing
Our own desk measured pressing carefully this month and found that, resolved at fine resolution, adding size after protection did not help the mechanical entries we tested — the adds were bought where noise was largest relative to the new stop. That does not retire the habit for a discretionary trader reading structure by hand; it retires the idea that pressing is free. The scout and the protect are the load-bearing steps. The press is earned, and sometimes it is declined.
What this does to a losing sequence
A losing sequence of scouts is a series of small, defined costs. A losing sequence of full-size entries is a floor. The habit is not about winning more; it is about making sure the ordinary run of being wrong — which every process has — never becomes the event that ends the cycle.

No performance figures are given anywhere in this course, and none should be inferred. Every reference to "our own measurement" or "our lab" is simulated research on historical data — hypothetical, not actual trading, with the limitations hypothetical results carry — and describes what we learned, never a result anyone achieved. The mechanics of our own trading are not published; only the principles are. Trading forex and futures carries substantial risk of loss, including loss of the whole account. Common Questions
How small should a scout be?
Small enough that being wrong costs a fraction of the cycle's room to the floor — not a fraction of the balance. The exact figure is a sizing decision for your account and your stop distance, worked backwards from the floor.
Should I always press a winning trade?
No. Pressing is earned by protection, and our own measurement found it is not free — added size sits closest to the new stop where noise is largest. Scout and protect are the load-bearing steps; the press is a judgment made by rule, and declining it is a valid outcome.
